Gorilla Hammers traces its roots back to 1938 when it began as Tedesco Pump Service, a modest petroleum service company founded by the original Joe Tedesco. Back then, Joe traveled throughout the northeast, repairing gas nozzles and the dials on gas pumps, which he fondly referred to as “pump computers.”
Following Joe’s sudden passing, his eldest son, Joe Tedesco II, returned from military service at 18 to support his family. Building on his father’s legacy, Joe II expanded the business to include hydraulic and pneumatic repair services for the industrial, automotive, and utility sectors. From a one-man operation in the family basement, the business evolved into a fully-equipped facility serving major clients like the Mass Bay Transit Authority and Hood Milk.
In 1979, Joe II pursued his passion for auctioneering, passing the torch to his younger brother Robert, who, with a partner, incorporated the business as Tech Hydraulics Inc. The business expanded further with the influx of construction projects, including the iconic Big Dig. Seeing potential growth in hydraulic hammers, Robert shifted the focus in the late 1990s.
In 2003, Robert approached Joe II’s son, Joe Tedesco III, proposing a strategic shift toward hydraulic hammers under the trade name “Gorilla” for a distinctive identity. Recognizing the opportunity, Joe III bought out Robert’s partner and collaborated to transition from general hydraulic repair to specializing in hydraulic breakers. Gorilla invested in specialized equipment, and field service vehicles, and recruited personnel committed to customer service.
Within three years, Gorilla doubled its revenues, expanding nationally and exporting to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. By 2006, Gorilla introduced its rental fleet of hammer-equipped excavators, informed by decades of field testing and repair experience. The GHB line was born, evolving into the improved GXS line today.
With a singular focus on hydraulic hammers, service, parts, and accessories, Gorilla Hammers continues the legacy initiated by Joe Tedesco over 80 years ago. The commitment to customer service remains unwavering, just as it was during the gas nozzle repair route in the early days.
