Choosing a Hydraulic Hammer for Your Project

Hydraulic hammer

Hydraulic hammers—also called hydraulic breakers or hoes-rams—are powerful tools used in demolition, excavation, and various industrial applications. From breaking reinforced concrete to busting through boulders and bedrock, they’re essential across many worksites. Choosing the right one can feel overwhelming if you’re unfamiliar with how different hammers perform.

Match the Hammer to the Job

Hydraulic breakers come in many sizes and power levels, so choosing one suited to the job at hand is essential. Undersized hammers struggle to break material efficiently, often overheat, and can suffer long-term damage if misused. You also run the risk of increased repair costs. A good rule: if the hammer is consistently moving through material with each cycle, you’re using the right size. For example, a 5,000 ft-lb breaker on a PC200 that performs consistently is often more efficient than an 8,000 ft-lb model on a heavier carrier, especially in demolition or excavation work. Many contractors choose the largest breaker their carrier can safely handle to avoid unnecessary rentals.

Match the Hammer to the Carrier

Selecting the right hammer also depends on your carrier—whether it’s a skid steer, mini-excavator, or a full-sized crawler. The carrier must safely support the hammer without tipping or diving as the tool works. Too heavy a hammer makes it difficult for the operator to move across uneven or hard rock, while also causing excess recoil that can wear out clamps, pipes, and carrier weldments. At the same time, a hammer that’s too small can be damaged by the down-pressure exerted by the carrier, leading to cracked weldments and broken fasteners. Balance is key for safety and longevity.

Match the Hydraulic Flow to the Hammer

Hydraulic hammers rely on oil flow from the carrier to operate correctly. Despite what some sales reps may claim, every breaker has a specific operating range for hydraulic volume, pressure, and backpressure. Too much oil or pressure can overspeed the hammer and cause internal damage, while too little flow weakens performance and may cause friction damage inside. Most carriers can be fine-tuned, but to do it properly, you’ll need a hydraulic technician with the right flow meter to calibrate the system for the specific hammer you’re using.
